A Short History of The Daleks

Babylon 5
Dr Who
Star Trek
Farscape
Red Dwarf
Space A & B
Stargate

The Daleks have been around nearly as long as Doctor Who, making their first appearance in the SECOND story of the first series.

The history of the Daleks is a bit convoluted, with the first reported version stating that they had been at war with the Thals, another race on their home planet of Skaro, and had had to adapt to life within the metallic walls of their city, and also within the casings of the machine that we recognise as the Dalek today.

A History of The Daleks

Years later, it was revealed that a scientist, Davros, had foreseen that his race would mutate into non humanoids, and require a survival suit to live.

Davros developed the tank like machines and armed them, also experimenting on genetic material to create a new creature from his own race, one which would survive by destroying anything that was different from them.

The Daleks have survived throughout each of the Doctors reigns, and even had a few spin-offs of their own!

In the 1960’s, they had a colour comic strip in TV 21, and a series of hardcover annuals have been in regular print ever since. They were also one of the first mass merchandise items, becoming the ‘Must Have’ toy for Christmas 1964 and ’65!

Many items were available, from friction drive toys to bubble bath and soap!

Two full colour cinema films were produced in the ‘60’s, both adapted from the original TV scripts that were written by Dalek creator Terry Nation. These films starred Hammer films stalwart Peter Cushing as ‘Doctor Who’, as well as some impressive sets.

DALEK TV STORIES

The following is a list of the Dalek stories that have been shown on TV. The titles that I have used for the William Hartnell stories are the ones used by the BBC and all reference books, etc.  The William Hartnell era episodes all had individual titles and so some of the overall STORIES are sometimes referred to by the FIRST episode title. Where this is the case, I have put this in brackets

William Hartnell

The Dalek Invasion of Earth (A.K.A Worlds End)
